How Important Are References

Irrespective of the job you do, it is smart to assume that your references will be checked. Most employers check an average of three references.

It is important to choose the right people to be your references. While ideal references will only say good things, it is also important to make sure that your references can talk about your contributions to a company as well as your professionalism and skills.

Employers are keen to find out if you will be a good fit for their company. They will want to know of your achievements at other companies and how reliable you are.

Here is a general list of questions employees will ask of your references:
  • Job title and dates of employment
  • The reason you left your job
  • The professional relationship between you and the person giving a reference and the capacity in which the reference knew you
  • Key responsibilities in the job
  • Most important contributions in that job
  • Relationship with co-workers and Management
  • Professional attitude
  • Professional Strengths and Weaknesses
  • Overall assessment of your professional capability in terms of previous positions and the position you are being considered for
One of the most important questions that is asked:
"If given the opportunity, would you rehire this person or work with or for this person again."

Be sure you know what your reference is going to say about you.
